Paraplanners - How to Stand Out in a Challenging Market!

Simon Winston

Updated: Jan 19, 2022

Paraplanners are arguably the backbone of any Financial Planning office. Since the Royal Commission, the role has dramatically evolved.

Giving successful advice to clients requires great financial creativity, often spearheaded by Paraplanners, making them an invaluable addition to any office.

Advice for Paraplanners

Essentially, just as the financial plan you create for a client would reflect the particulars of their situation, your Paraplanning resume should demonstrate the specifics of your technical prowess.

In the career history section of a CV, each employment entry can become repetitive. The responsibilities in each position can remain very similar, making it hard for you to stand out against the crowd.

Differentiating yourself

Have you thought about talking through your achievements?

This will generate a more unique document that truly reflects your experience and technical abilities. An example may be a recommendation you gave which lead to a satisfied client.

Perhaps research you carried out was an integral part of winning over prospective business?

Have you contributed towards the development of your team or are you involved in developing the department’s client servicing proposition?

You’re the boss!

When applying to boutique practices, you need to remember that the hiring manager is typically the individual who will pay your salary.

When you next apply for a role, upload your CV but stop and ask yourself “would I hire myself if I was the Director?”

If you had to think for a moment, chances are, you wouldn’t want to pay yourself. Why would someone else?

In this scenario you should edit where necessary to ensure your document captures your greatest working achievements.
